双语能力的益处
The Benefits of Being Bilingual
在美国,会说一种以上语言的人越来越普遍。掌握双语不仅能让孩子在未来的学习和工作中更具竞争力,研究还表明,学习多种语言能够提升儿童的学习能力,并增强他们作为全球公民的自我认知。
Speaking more than one language is becoming increasingly common in the US. Being bilingual not only gives adults a competitive advantage in the working world, but research has shown that learning multiple languages increases children’s aptitude for learning and awareness of themselves as global citizens.
学术能力评估考试(SAT)的结果显示,学习外语四年或以上的学生,在语言和数学部分的成绩通常高于其他学生。科学研究也发现,双语能力会对大脑产生深远影响,不仅能够提升与语言无关的认知能力,甚至还有助于在老年时期降低失智症风险。一些研究还表明,学习另一种语言能够帮助儿童更好地理解英语的结构和词汇。
Results from the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) show that students who had studied a foreign language for 4 or more years outscored other students on the verbal and math portions of the test. Scientific research has found that being bilingual can have a profound effect on human brain, improving cognitive skills not related to language and even shielding against dementia in old age. Some studies also have found that learning another language can enhance knowledge of English structure and vocabulary.
为什么我的孩子应该学习普通话?
Why Should my Child Study Mandarin Chinese?
普通话与英语、西班牙语一样,是世界上使用最广泛的语言之一。随着贸易、制造业以及文化联系的迅速增长,中国在全球的重要性也日益提升。学习普通话,能够让孩子与世界各地数以百万计的人交流,也能为他们未来的发展打下坚实基础。
Along with English and Spanish, Mandarin Chinese is the most widely-spoken language in the world, and with rapidly increasing trade, manufacturing and cultural links, China is a country of exponentially increasing global importance. Learn to speak Mandarin and you can communicate with millions of people around the world.
为什么要现在开始?
Why Start Now?
任何年龄学习语言都有益处。然而,根据应用语言学中心(Center for Applied Linguistics)的研究,人类大脑在出生到青春期前这一阶段,对语言发展的接受能力最强。在青春期之前开始学习语言的孩子,更有可能形成接近母语者的发音。如果孩子从小开始学习,并在高中和大学阶段持续学习,他们就更有可能达到较高的流利水平,而这是许多学校较晚开始语言课程所难以实现的。
Learning a language at any age is beneficial. However, according to Center for Applied Linguistics, the human brain is more open to linguistic development during the years between birth and pre-adolescence. Children who learn a language before the onset of adolescence are more likely to develop native-like pronunciation. When children have an early start and continue their language studies through high school and college, they are able to achieve levels of fluency that would otherwise be impossible with the late start of most language programs in schools.
为什么选择沉浸式课程?
Why an Immersion Program?
根据应用语言学中心的研究,沉浸式课程是美国学校中发展最快、也是最有效的语言学习方式之一。双语沉浸式教学基于这样一种理念:学生通过实际使用语言来学习,往往比通过传统的、直接讲解式的教学方法学得更好。在完全沉浸的语言环境中,学生会在教师的引导下,自然地发展听、说、读、写各方面的能力。
According to the Center for Applied Linguistics, immersion programs are the fastest growing and most effective method for language learning available in U.S. schools. Dual immersion instruction is based on the philosophy that students learn language best through use as opposed to more traditional, explicit instruction. Students at our school learn in a fully immersive environment where they are guided in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in the language of instruction, be it Chinese or English.
中文难学吗?
Is Chinese Difficult to Learn?
从许多方面来看,普通话其实比一些欧洲语言更容易学习,因为它的语法相对简单。与法语、德语或英语不同,中文没有动词变位,也没有名词的性别和单复数词形变化。例如,英语学习者需要记忆 “see / saw / seen” 这样的不同动词形式,而中文只需要记住一个词:“看”。同样,在英语中要区分 “cat” 和 “cats”,而在中文中只用一个形式:“猫”。
In many ways, Mandarin Chinese is much easier to learn than European languages due to its relatively uncomplicated grammar. Unlike French, German or English, Chinese has no verb conjugation (no need to memorize verb tenses!) and no noun declension (gender and number distinctions). For example, while someone learning English has to learn different verb forms like “see/saw/seen,” all you need to remember in Chinese is just one word: “kan.” While in English you have to distinguish between “cat” and “cats,” in Chinese there is only one form: mao.
每年,世界各地都有越来越多的学生满怀热情并且成功地将普通话作为第二语言来学习。只要有合适的语言环境和支持,您的孩子也一定可以做到。
Each year more and more students around the world are studying Mandarin as a second language with enthusiasm and success. If they can learn it, so can you!
